The Vibrant Art of Alex Schlegel
Bay Area researcher and artist Alex Schlegel creates compelling installations where light is the protagonist using computational processes, electronics, and traditional materials. While there is clearly a lot of creative exploration here, there is also a scientific method behind the work - one steeped in a lifetime studying links between the complex, dynamic, distributed networks of the brain and the mind they create.
His PhD work in cognitive neuroscience at Dartmouth College focused on large scale neural networks that enable the flexible construction and manipulation of visual imagery. Alex has taken this experiment beyond the sterile confines of labs, casually placing them in empty spaces of little apparent import, which only adds to the visual dichotomy which blurs the line between art and science.
