Foil Business Cards

We’re all drawn to shiny/metallic things. The unexpected play of light across reflective surfaces reminds us of precious metals and jewels – a phenomenon that makes foil stamping a brilliant technique for highlighting a name or brand.

Whether it’s the quality we associate with gold, the classic allure of silver or the bold richness of copper, there’s an element of luxury that comes with a metallic foil finish.

How Foil Stamping Works

It all begins with a “die”, or metal plate with a reversed image raised from the surface. This will be punched into the foil itself, which is a roll of colored mylar that contains a heat-activated adhesive.

The die is pressed into the card – pressure and heat fuses the foil to the surface, producing a durable guilded effect that won’t chip or fade with time.

Foil Stamping vs Metallic Inks

There are trade-offs to both techniques. Metallic inks are more cost effective and have the advantage of a wider variety of colors, which often makes it easier to stick to branding guidelines.

While foil stamping does offer a more limited range of colors, the shiny/reflective effect is much more pronounced since we are fusing completely different material with the paper, rather than simply letting the paper absorb the ink.

Embossed Foil Business Card

Foil stamping is often used in conjuction with embossing. The raised surface is aligned or “registered” to match the location of the foil, pushing the metallic print above the surface of the paper and adding an additional three-dimensional effect quality to your business card.

This register embossing technique works with digital and offset printing, but there is something about the foil/embossing combination of depth and shine.
