Quad

Spacing added to align an item to be centered, align it to the left or to the righ.

Referred to as quad center, quad left and quad right.

Quad Center Line

A line which is centered in a particular space.

A line that is centered as opposed to being flush left or flush right.

Quad Left

Lines starting at the left margin (flush left).

Quad Right

Lines starting at the right margin (flush right).

Quadroplex

A term used to describe two-up printing on a duplex printer.

Two pages are printed on each side of the sheet, aligned to produce four pages.

Quads

Refers to the four separated negatives, cyan, magenta, yellow and black, used for process color printing.

Quadtones

Four halftone images, produced at different screen angles, which were made from the same image and then printed over each other in four different colors.

Quality Paperback

A soft cover edition of a book that generally has a high-quality binding and is in a larger size format than a traditional paperback.

Also known as Trade Paperback.

Quark Xpress

Computer software for page layout widely used in the commercial print industry.

Quarter-Bound

A book with a leather spine and with the sides bound in paper or cloth.

Quarter-Fold

A type of fold where the piece is folded in half and then folded in half again.

The folds are parallel to each other.

Quarto

A book between octavo and folio in size; approximately 11 to 13 inches tall.

To make a quarto, a sheet of paper is folded twice, forming four leaves (eight pages).

Query

Provides data criteria to the computer for the purpose of obtaining specific records from the database.

Queue

A list of jobs spooled into the computer or printing system, waiting to be printed.

Queued

When an item is in the process of waiting to be printed.

Quick Stick

A property of an adhesive that allows a label to adhere with little pressure applied.

Quickmaster DI 46-4

A machine manufactured by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG for printing four-color, short job runs in formats of up to 34 × 46 centimeters.

The press uses the Direct Imaging principle, where the print form is created and the printing plate is imaged directly in the press.

The machine has a maximum printing speed of 10,000 sheets per hour, and can support up to 35 successive print jobs.

Compact operation is ensured thanks to the Quickmaster’s satellite construction with central impression cylinder and four inking units, which use conventional waterless offset inks.

QuickTime

Apple’’s digital storage method for movie and audio files.

Quire

1/20 of a ream of paper or 25 sheets.

Quotation

A price, given by the printer or distributor, based on the specifications supplied for that product.

QWERTY keyboard

Standard typewriter keyboard which was named after the first six keys of the row directly below the numerials.
